Information and communication technology continue to play significant roles in many economic sectors, including the healthcare environment. Notably, nursing informatics has been vital in providing the architecture and framework for communication and knowledge sharing within the clinical environment. With the growing technology in healthcare, Electronic Health Records has taken a central role in the management of patient data, their medical information and history. These roles continue to illuminate the significance of electronic health records within the healthcare unit. However, when it comes to nursing practice, not much has attention has been given to the significance of electronic health records. As such, this article explores and presents the significance of electronic health records in nursing practice. By examining the outcomes established by the previous researchers, this article concentrates on three key areas that benefit from electronic health records; the productivity of nurses, quality of care and patient safety.
