Abstract

The cooperative learning method is one of the most effective student-centered learning methods used in teaching English language classes. It is an updated and effective pedagogic method that should be integrated in classrooms. The previous reviewed studies showed that group work is better than individual work since student-centered learning method may improve students’ knowledge of the language because of their effective cooperative engagement. This paper aims at exploring students' engagement in cooperative learning methods classroom while teaching the vocabulary of global issues. The study employed a descriptive method research design where the qualitative data collection method was conducted. 25 participants are observed for seven weeks (40 hours) at MALI; the Modern American Language Institute in Taiz, Yemen, 2019. Then interviews took place within a period of two days, immediately after the intervention phase. Interviews were conducted with 8 respondents out of the 25 participants to solicit in-depth of the responses. Coding was used for observation; manual analysis was used for interviews. Based on the findings obtained from the observation data, it was evident that the participants engaged cooperatively in classrooms rather than individually. The findings also showed that learning English cooperatively improved students’ performance in classrooms. It was shown that behavioral, emotional and cognitive students’ engagement through cooperative learning activities improves academic achievement in learning and acquiring vocabulary. The participants gained confidence and their language skills were improved. Social skills like leadership, decision-making, trust building, communication and conflict-management skills were also developed. The study concludes that cooperative learning contributes to cognitive growth, increased autonomy and productivity of adult learners. Cooperative learning method should be integrated in English language classrooms to improve the growth and productive knowledge of students at tertiary level.
